My podcast with Charon QC is up and, I have to say, it was a real pleasure talking to Mike. My Navy days seem like they’re a lifetime ago – and I’m always surprised (and flattered) when people want to hear more about why I joined, what it was like working on an aircraft carrier and why I left.
As I mentioned to Mike, there’s a PBS series called “Carrier” that did a great job of showing what it’s like to work and live on an US Navy aircraft carrier. While my days as a Quartermaster (Navigation petty officer) on the USS Lexington took place a good few years before the PBS USS Nimitz documentary, I can tell you, nothing’s changed.
Below is probably my favourite Carrier episode – the one with the crossing the equator ceremony and pitching deck.
As Cdr Dave “Sex” Fravor (sexual favour – geddit?) says, “Never turn your back on the sea”.
